The Tomato Firmware is a free, open-source software for your router. The firmware allows you to adjust and configure more settings than the typical commercial firmware pre-installed on wireless routers. When installed, you must enter a user name and password to access the Tomato firmware. A default user name and password are used to access the firmware when you first install, but it is a good idea to change those credentials to secure the modem.
Connect an Ethernet cable from your computer to the router.
Open your Web browser. Enter "http://192.168.1.1" into the browser address bar.
Enter "root" for the user name and password when prompted to log in to the Tomato firmware ("admin" can also be used for the user name, the password is still "root").
Navigate to the "Administration" tab.
Enter a new user name if you wish in the "User name" field. Enter a new password, enter it again to confirm. Click "Save" to save the new password.
