How to Completely Reboot Your Computer

By Darcy Logan

Rebooting a computer is done by restarting it. There are a several different ways to reboot a computer. You may also want to reboot a computer into safe mode or use a system CD to troubleshoot any problems you are having.

Step 1

Click "Start," then "Restart."

Step 2

Press "Ctrl-Alt-Delete" simultaneously. Then select the "Restart" option.

Step 3

Press and hold the computer's power key. Most systems will power down after about five seconds. Because this method will force a hard power-down, which does not give hardware or software any warning that power is about to be cut, data can be lost. For this reason, a hard power-down should only be performed if other efforts to restart the computer do not work.

Step 4

Unplug your computer and plug it back in. Turn the computer back on. This will also force a hard power-down, so you should only do it if other methods did not work.

Step 1

Shut down your computer. Wait 30 seconds.

Step 2

Turn your computer back on. Immediately press and hold the "F8" key.

Step 3

When the "Advanced Boot Options" screen appears, select "Safe Mode" using the arrow keys on your computer and hit "Enter."

Step 1

Place a bootable system CD or DVD into the disc drive.

Step 2

Restart your computer.

Step 3

When prompted, hit any key to boot the computer using the disc.
