Create XLS Files

There are many different file extensions that you can use in the computing world. Each file extension is associated with a specific type of file. Websites have their own file extension of ".html." Word documents have their own file extension of ".doc." Excel spreadsheets also have their own unique extension of ".xls." Because most businesses are incorporating the use of spreadsheets on a daily basis, learning how to create .xls files can help you to get ahead of the job competition.

Step 1

Open the Microsoft Excel program on your computer. Enter all of your desired data into the Microsoft Excel spreadsheet.

Step 2

Click on "File." Select "Save As." Enter the name that you would like for your Excel spreadsheet to be saved as.

Step 3

Click the "File Type" drop down menu. Select the ".XLS" file extension. Close out of the Excel spreadsheet after you have saved the file.

Create a "Google Documents" account if you do not have the Excel program on your computer and do not wish to purchase the program. By creating an account with Google Documents, you can create spreadsheets and save them online as .XLS files. The files can also be emailed and shared with others.
