The Basic Input Output System (BIOS) is a set of instructions your Toshiba Tecra uses to verify all its components are working before loading the operating system. You can change several settings in the BIOS if you need to change the way your laptop boots up, such as if you wanted to load an operating system from a USB drive. The BIOS can't be accessed directly through the operating system like any other menu, and must instead be accessed by restarting the laptop.
Power down the Toshiba Tecra laptop. Wait five seconds and then press the power button.
Hold down the "Escape" key while the Tecra laptop begins booting up again. Wait for the "Check System" message to appear on the laptop's screen.
Let go of the "Escape" key and press the "F1" key. Use the left and right arrow keys to navigate through the various BIOS menu screens.
Use the up and down arrow keys to scroll through the options in the BIOS menus. Make any changes you need to the BIOS options.
Press the "End" key to save your changes to the BIOS and restart the Toshiba Tecra laptop computer.
If you change the wrong setting in your Toshiba Tecra's BIOS, you could potentially prevent the laptop from booting up properly. Before making any changes, you should save backup copies of any files you need to an external device.
