How to Recover Toshiba NB205/NB255/NB305 Series Netbook Factory Settings

By Tyson Cliffton

The Toshiba NB205, NB255 and NB305 series netbooks are small and easy to take with you almost everywhere you go. If you start experiencing instability with the operating system, recovering your netbook's factory settings resolves system errors and restores missing system files. But because this process also erases the hard drive, use it as a last-ditch option.

Things You'll Need

  • External USB optical drive
  • Flash drive
  • Recovery DVDs

Recover Using Recovery Partition

Step 1

Plug in your Toshiba NB205, NB255 or NB305 series netbook to a wall outlet using its AC adapter. Shut down the netbook, then hold down the "0" (zero) key and press the Power button to restart it. Continue holding down the "0" key.

Step 2

Click "Yes" along the bottom of the screen when a warning message appears in red lettering informing you that all the information on the hard drive will be erased as part of the recovery process. The netbook will continue booting up to the Toshiba Recovery Wizard.

Step 3

Select "Recovery of Factory Default Software" when asked to select a process, then click "Next."

Step 4

Select "Recover to out-of-box state" when asked to select a recovery method, then click "Next." Click "Next" again after a second warning message appears on the screen. The recovery process will begin.

Step 5

Press any key on the keyboard to restart the netbook when a message appears on the screen saying the recovery is finished. The Toshiba netbook will boot up to the Windows setup screen.

Recover Using Recovery DVDs or Flash Drive

Step 1

Plug in an external USB optical drive and insert the first recovery DVD into the optical drive. Alternatively, you can plug a flash drive with the recovery software on it into an available USB port.

Step 2

Restart the Toshiba netbook, making sure it is connected to a wall outlet rather than drawing power from its battery.

Step 3

Press the "F12" key repeatedly when the netbook begins to boot up until you are redirected to the Boot menu. Highlight "DVD" or "USB Flash" using the arrow keys on the keyboard, depending on which recovery media you are using. Press "Enter" to boot up to the highlighted item.

Step 4

Click "Yes" when a warning message appears on the screen informing you that all the information on your hard drive will be erased and rewritten. The Toshiba Recovery Wizard will appear on the screen.

Step 5

Select "Recovery of Factory Default Software" when asked to select a process, then click "Next." Select "Recover to out-of-box state" and click "Next." Click "Next" again when another warning message appears. The recovery process will begin.

Step 6

Insert and remove DVDs as prompted if you are using a set of recovery DVDs. Unplug the optical drive or the flash drive when a message appears on the screen saying the recovery process is complete. Press any key to restart your Toshiba netbook and allow it to boot up to the Windows setup screen.
