How to Stop Ads by Google

By Jason Spidle

Advertisements by Google appear throughout the Internet on many of the Web's most popular websites. The Google AdSenes network has become one of the largest online advertising networks, and it can sometimes seem like Google text and banner ads are inescapable. But with some basic ad blocking software that is available for the three major Web browsers, you can stop ads by Google from being displayed on Google pages and on other websites.

Internet Explorer

Step 1

Launch Internet Explorer.

Step 2

Select "Safety" and then "InPrivate Filtering Settings."

Step 3

Select "Choose content to block or allow" and then set the minimum number of website visits to the lowest possible value if there are not items displayed in the list. If your history is completely empty, you will need to browse through at least three pages with Google advertisements before you are able to block the ads using InPrivate Filtering.

Step 4

Select each "googlesyndication.com" item in the list and then click "Block." This will stop Google advertisements from being displayed when browsing the Internet.

Mozilla Firefox

Step 1

Launch Mozilla Firefox.

Step 2

Select "Tools" and then "Add-ons."

Step 3

Select "Get Add-ons" and search for "Adblock Plus." (See References)

Step 4

Click "Add to Firefox" and then restart Firefox once the extension is installed.

Step 5

Navigate to a website with Google advertising and then click the Adblock Plus button in your Firefox toolbar. This will open the Adblock module at the bottom of Firefox.

Step 6

Select each "googlesyndication.com" item in the list and then click "Block." This will stop Google advertisements from being displayed when browsing the Internet.

Google Chrome

Step 1

Launch Google Chrome.

Step 2

Navigate to the "Chrome Extensions" page for AdBlock. (See Resources)

Step 3

Click "Install." The AdBlock extension will be installed and ready to use immediately.

Step 4

Navigate to a website with Google advertising and then right-click in an empty space and select "AdBlock," "Block an ad on this page."

Step 5

Click the Google advertisement on the page and then click "Looks good" if the advertisement is blocked correctly.
