Volume controls can be found on the front console of a laptop. If the laptop emits no sound, the volume could be turned off or could be turned down all the way. The Windows operating system also features a speaker volume icon. You can check those options first when a laptop is on mute. If these steps do not work, the laptop might have a hardware problem.
Click the "Speaker" icon at the lower-right corner of the taskbar next to the "Time" indicator to open the volume control. Click on the "Mute" button in the lower-left corner to turn the sound back on.
Check the volume levels to make sure they are not down all the way. Click anywhere on your desktop and the volume control window will close.
Check the audio controls on the console of the laptop. If the sound button is red, it is muted. Press the button to turn the sound back on. The volume button may be down all the way. Press this button repeatedly to raise the volume.
Click the Windows-logo button, the arrow to the right of "Shutdown," and then click "Restart." Rebooting your computer sometimes will turn the sound back on if the above steps do not work.
