How to Use VLC With HDHomeRun
HDHomeRun TV tuners can stream TV channels to any computer on the same local network as the HDHomeRun device. SiliconDust provides a software package that can control the HDHomeRun device, change channels and play TV shows on any computer on the local network. The HDHomeRun Config application plays TV channels in HDHomeRun QuickTV by default, but you can use the VLC media player instead.
Connect the HDHomeRun device directly to your computer or to a router on the local network using an Ethernet cable.
Download the HDHomeRun software from SiliconDust’s website and install it on your computer by double-clicking the downloaded “.exe” file and following the instructions on your screen.
Launch the HDHomeRun Setup application by clicking “Start,” clicking “All Programs,” clicking the “HDHomeRun” folder and clicking “HDHomeRun Setup.” Click “Yes” if a user account control prompt appears.
Click the “Application” tab at the top of the HDHomeRun Setup window.
Click the “Preview Application” box, select “VideoLAN VLC” from the list, and click “OK.”
Launch the HDHomeRun Config application by clicking “Start,” clicking “All Programs,” “clicking “HDHomeRun” and clicking “HDHomeRun Config (GUI).”
Select your HDHomeRun device by clicking it in the Device list, and then click the “Tuner” tab.
Use the options in the Configuration section to select a channel and program. You can use the two “Seek” buttons to find the next or previous channel.
Click the “View” button to watch the selected channel. The application automatically opens the selected channel and plays it in VLC. You can change channels using the HDHomeRun Config application.
