The PC Requirements for NullDC 1.6

By Daniel Foster

NullDC 1.0.0 1.6 Beta is an emulator that allows you to play Sega Dreamcast games on PC computers. Compared to other emulation software, NullDC has greater compatibility and runs well on many computers. Although the system requirements for NullDC 1.6 are not hefty by any means, not all computers can run this software.

Processor and Memory

According to the official NullDC system requirements, you must have a processor compatible with the SSE1 instruction set. This includes the Intel Pentium 3, AMD Athlon XP and newer models. Most consumer desktop processors support SSE as well as the newer SSE2 and SSE3 instruction sets, so this requirement should not pose problems for most people. The developer suggests using a 2.6GHz Intel Pentium 4, an AMD Athlon 3000+ processor or faster. Because of their design, Pentium M processors with clock speeds as low as 1.86GHz can run NullDC just fine, though. The maker of NullDC does not recommend using an Intel Celeron or AMD Duron CPU. The minimum memory requirement is 256MB, but you need at least 512MB of dual-channel DDR3 RAM for better performance.

Video Card

Your system must have a video card supporting projected texture mapping and DirectX 9, such as the Nvidia GeForce MX or ATI Radeon series. You can obtain higher graphics quality with a more advanced video card with support for vertex shaders, including the GeForce 3 TI and the ATI Radeon 8500. The Nvidia GeForce 4 video card does not meet the recommended specifications, however. Note the models the developer suggests are relatively old. Nearly any modern video card likely exceeds the minimum specifications.

Operating System and Software

NullDC 1.6 works on Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. The emulator software works with Windows Vista, but it needs a more powerful CPU and more memory. The developer also states Vista users are likely to experience audio problems. You need to install DirectX 9.0c and the VisualC++ 2005 Service Pack 1 runtime on your computer to use NullDC. These free Microsoft packages come with the software download.

Minimum vs. Recommended Requirements

Keep in mind the minimum requirements are the bare minimum for running games on the NullDC emulator. Consequently, you may experience slow performance on low-end hardware. Some games also have higher system requirements than others, so plan accordingly. The best way to ensure compatibility with all games is to use a PC meeting the recommended requirements.
