The pricing and May 19 announcement date originated with Dealabs and were independently picked up across multiple publications. TheWalkManBlog also reported a Canadian price of CA$849 two weeks ago. Cross-outlet agreement on both figure and date, anchored by an accidental first-party listing, puts this in a different credibility bracket than a single leak from an anonymous tipster.

There is also a paper trail. Sony filed a trademark for "1000X the Collexion" last August, TheWalkManBlog reported two weeks ago, months before any public announcement. The model number WH-1000XX, with its double-X suffix, reinforces that this is not simply the next entry in the WH-1000XM sequence.

Not everything in the leak cycle carries the same weight, though. Packaging and spec details come primarily from Notebookcheck's pre-launch reporting three days ago and are moderately credible. Claims about sound quality and USB audio trace back to a single Reddit account relaying secondhand tester impressions. Treat those accordingly.

The 1000X line launched with the MDR-1000X in 2016, making this its tenth year. Android Authority interpreted "The ColleXion" branding as a deliberate milestone marker rather than a standard product revision last month, a reading that aligns with the trademark Sony quietly filed last August. Whether this is a limited run or the opening of a permanent luxury tier remains unconfirmed. But the name, the trademark filing, and the double-X suffix all point away from a routine successor, and the price gap makes that reading hard to argue with.

At $649, the ColleXion would sit roughly $300 above the current WH-1000XM6, as Android Authority noted last month. Sony has never priced a consumer wireless headphone at that level. The leaked spec list does not show a performance jump obviously large enough to explain that premium on hardware alone, which means Sony is selling something else alongside the headphones: positioning, materials, the occasion itself.

The design details make that explicit. Leaked materials describe metal hinges, a metal-and-synthetic-leather build, and a sculpted carrying case with an integrated handle and magnetic closure, per Notebookcheck. The headphones reportedly do not fold, per TheWalkManBlog and tester accounts cited by Android Authority. A non-folding design with a purse-style carry case is not engineered for the commuter market. It is engineered to sit on a shelf and look like something worth owning.

On paper, the hardware represents a genuine step up from the WH-1000XM5 in at least two measurable areas. Notebookcheck reports a 12-microphone ANC system, more pickup points that theoretically improve isolation and ambient sound processing. Battery life is listed at up to 24 hours with noise cancellation active and 32 hours without, with roughly 1.5 hours of playback from five minutes of charging.

A MediaTek MT2855 chip potentially paired with Sony's QN3 processor, along with DSEE Ultimate audio upscaling, appear in reporting by both Notebookcheck and Android Authority, though none of the chip details have official confirmation. If the QN3 does appear here, that would represent a real upgrade over the QN1 in the XM5, at least in ANC computation terms.

The trouble is that microphone count and processor specs tell you what a headphone might do. They do not tell you how it sounds. The only available signals on that question cut in the wrong direction. Early tester accounts relayed via Reddit, cited by Android Authority last month, suggest no major sound quality improvements over the WH-1000XM5 and possibly no USB audio playback. These are the least substantiated claims in the entire leak cycle, sourced from one anonymous account describing secondhand tester impressions, and should carry the least weight. But they sharpen the central question: if the ANC gains are real but the acoustic tuning is similar, how much of the $649 is buying a better headphone versus a more beautiful object?

There is also a small but telling inconsistency in the packaging materials. Notebookcheck identified a contradiction: Sony's own "in the box" slide omits a charging cable, citing e-waste reduction, while a separate promotional image appears to show a USB-A to USB-C cable included. A 1.2m 3.5mm audio cable is listed without dispute. For a product pitched heavily on premium presentation, that inconsistency is a rough edge, one that may reflect a last-minute packaging change that did not propagate cleanly through the promotional materials.

Based on available leaks, the ColleXion reads as a product aimed at two audiences: existing 1000X loyalists who want a physical upgrade to mark the decade, and buyers who treat headphones as objects worth displaying. It is not clearly positioned as a performance leap for anyone primarily motivated by ANC isolation or sound tuning.

The credibility tiers matter here for buyers watching today's livestream. What the leaks have established with reasonable confidence: the $649 / €629 / £549 pricing across markets, the May 19 announcement, the WH-1000XX model number, at least two colorways, the non-folding form factor, the metal-and-synthetic-leather build, and the purse-style carry case. What remains genuinely uncertain: the chip configuration, the ANC performance relative to current flagships, the audio tuning, USB audio support, and whether a charging cable ships in the box.

Android Authority called the €629 price steep last month. At $649, Sony needs today's announcement to close that gap specifically on audio performance. Materials and anniversary branding explain some of the premium. They do not explain all of it. If the ColleXion is to earn its place as a genuine collector's tier above the XM line, the livestream will need to show something the leaks have not yet confirmed: that it sounds as good as it looks.
