As part of the Windows Essentials 2012 suite, Photo Gallery receives updates that provide support for newer file types while also fixing known bugs and issues. The Windows Essentials updater notifies you when new updates are available in the form of system tray notifications, which you can click to automatically update Photo Gallery. Alternately, you can download and install the latest build of Windows Essentials 2012 to forcibly update your current Photo Gallery installation.
Windows Essentials Update Notifications
Open Windows Photo Gallery, and wait for 10 to 20 seconds while the application communicates with the Microsoft servers. If the application has an update ready for download, click the notification balloon that shows up on the system tray.
Click Yes on the UAC dialog box. The Windows Essentials updater downloads and installs the latest updates for Windows Photo Gallery, and also to any other applications that you have installed from the Windows Essentials 2012 suite.
Click Close after the update process finishes. Exit Windows Photo Gallery and then relaunch the application to let the update take effect.
Manually Download and Update
Get the Windows Essentials Web installer from Microsoft and then open the downloaded file to launch the Windows Essentials setup. If prompted, click Yes on the UAC dialog box to proceed.
Select the Choose the Programs You Want to Install option, where you can deselect any Windows Essentials applications that you do not want installed. All currently installed applications including Windows Photo Gallery get updated to the latest build.
Click Install after making your selections to start the update. After the update process completes, click Close to exit the Windows Essentials setup.
