How to Connect to the Internet Using An Ethernet Cable

By Hollan Johnson

Modern computers can access the Internet in many ways. While many computers access the Internet through Wi-Fi, some computers do not have the capabilities. If you have an Ethernet port, you can connect your computer to the Internet using a Ethernet cord and a DSL or cable modem. You can connect Macs and PCs to the Internet in this way, as long as they have Ethernet ports available.

Things You'll Need

  • Ethernet cable
  • DSL or Cable modem

Step 1

Plug your DSL or cable modem into a power source.

Step 2

Plug the DSL modem into a phone line using the "WAN" or "Line" port or plug the cable modem into the cable port.

Step 3

Plug the Ethernet cable into the DSL or cable modem using the "Ethernet" port. Plug the other end of the Ethernet cable into your computer's Ethernet port.

Step 4

Open the Internet browser on your computer.
