How to Convert HTM to PDF

By Robert Gidley

A file in HTM format is a Web page saved on your computer. Sometimes the file is saved with the HTML extension; these are the same file type. Converting the HTM file to a PDF makes it easier to email and print. HTM is also a convenient format to archive information. If you're using a Macintosh, the procedure is simple. On a Windows PC, it depends whether you have Acrobat Standard/Professional installed.

Creating a PDF using Windows with Adobe Acrobat

Step 1

If you have Adobe Acrobat (Standard or Professional) installed on your computer, you can convert HTM files into a PDF. If you don't have the software, check Section 2 for a free software package that lets you do the same thing.

Step 2

Open the HTM file by double clicking on it or by going to the Web page.

Step 3

From the "File" menu, choose "Print."

Step 4

Choose the "Acrobat Distiller" printer.

Step 5

Choose where you want to save the PDF. Give it a name, and you're done.

Creating a PDF Using Free Windows Software

Step 1

Go to CutePDF.com and download "CutePDF Writer" from the main page. This is free (and virus-free) software that creates PDFs in all versions of Windows, including Vista. The file is about 1.5 MB and should download quickly.

Step 2

Install CutePDF Writer on your PC by double clicking on the downloaded file and following the directions. You'll need to accept the license agreement.

Step 3

During installation, you'll be asked to allow CutePDF Writer to download another program from the website. Click "OK" to allow it.

Step 4

Open the HTM file by double clicking on it or by going to the Web page.

Step 5

From the "File" menu, choose "Print."

Step 6

A new printer has been added--the "CutePDF Writer" printer. Choose it and click on print.

Step 7

Choose where you want to save the PDF file. Give it a name, and you're done.
