Sometimes you'll find or receive an image file, like a TIFF, that contains a selection of text. Since image files aren't designed to handle text, this means you cannot copy or edit this information. If you wish your TIFF file was in an Excel spreadsheet so you could manipulate or sort data and perform calculations, making the conversion from TIFF to XLS can be done for free and in just a few steps by using a free online OCR tool.
Video of the Day
Upload your TIFF file to an online OCR (Optical Character Recognition) service, which identifies words within an image and converts them into a box of normal text on a web page that you can copy and edit. See the Resources section for a few of these services that you can use.
Launch Microsoft Excel and open a new blank spreadsheet.
Copy the text that the online OCR tool converted for you. Select the converted text on the web page, then right-click it and click "Copy."
Click on "Edit" and then click "Paste" in Microsoft Excel. The text will appear in your spreadsheet. Make any necessary edits or formatting changes, then save the file by clicking "File" and then "Save." Choose "Excel 97-2003 Workbook (*.xls)" from the "Save as Type" drop-down list and then click the "Save" button.
