How to Import 3Ds in Revit

Architects, engineers and other designers use 3DS Max Design to create dynamic computer renderings, animations and walkthroughs. The built-in modifiers of the program allow for special manipulations of a simple object, such as a cube or sphere. This allows designers to utilize the program to create special items or objects much easier than if they attempted the same item in some other program. For this reason, Autodesk built certain compatibilities into 3DS Max Design and its other programs.

Things You'll Need

  • Revit Architecture 2009 (or newer)
  • 3DS Max Design
  • 3DS Max file

Step 1

Export the desired 3DS Max file (MAX) as either a DWG, DXF or ADSK file. Revit does not allow for MAX files to be directly imported. You will need to convert the file into a file type that is allowed by exporting the file.

Step 2

Save the file in the target folder for the exported file. You have two options for naming the exported file: Keep the same name as the original 3DS Max file or specify a new name in the dialog box.

Step 3

Import the exported MAX file as a DWG, DXF or ADSK file into Revit by going to the "Insert" tab and selecting either the "Link CAD" or "Insert CAD" option. You will need to change the file type in the "Import/Link CAD" dialog box to the correct file type that you will be importing.

Step 4

Check the imported file or object for accuracy. If the file did not import correctly, try to import it again.

Tips & Warnings

  • Exported objects with modifiers will keep the current state of the modifier. If a modifier is turned off, it will not appear in the exported object.
  • Depending on how an object is created, you may not be able to apply a material to the imported 3DS Max created object.
