How to Make a Word Document File Smaller

By Kevin Lieberman

Make a Word document file smaller to save valuable space on your computer and make the file much easier to send by email or upload to the Web. Just think about how much space you can save on your computer if you shrink the file size of all of your Word documents. There are several options available for making your Word document file smaller in size and without reducing the quality or appearance of the document.

Step 1

Copy all the contents of the document by pressing "Ctrl" and "A" on your keyboard to select all, and "Ctrl" and "C" to copy.

Step 2

Open a new document file, by clicking the "File" menu and selecting "New."

Step 3

Paste the contents to the new document by pressing "Ctrl" and "V." Click the "File" menu and select "Save," to save the new document. By saving the original file contents in a new document file, you will shrink the file size by eliminating the auto-save information stored by the document while it is being created and edited.
