How to Rename a ZIP File

By Craig Witt

ZIP is one of the most widely used data compression and archive formats. Instead of forcing users to send multiple files individually, it allows them to combine and compress one or more files into a single ZIP archive. Because ZIP files exist on your system in the same manner as all other files, renaming them requires no special steps. Whether you use the Microsoft Windows or Apple Mac OS X operating system, simply use the system's native renaming command to change the name of a ZIP file.

Using Microsoft Windows

Step 1

Navigate to the folder containing your ZIP file.

Step 2

Click the ZIP file's icon to select it.

Step 3

Press the "F2" key.

Step 4

Type a new name for the file. Do not change the ".zip" file extension (only applicable if the extension is visible).

Step 5

Single-click on an area outside of the icon to confirm the name change.

Using Apple Mac OS X

Step 1

Navigate to the folder containing your ZIP file.

Step 2

Click the ZIP file's icon to select it.

Step 3

Click and hold on the file name directly below the icon. The text becomes editable momentarily.

Step 4

Type a new name for the file. Do not change the ".zip" file extension.

Step 5

Single-click on an area outside of the icon to confirm the name change.
