When you receive high-speed Internet service from Comcast, you may want to connect to it via a Wi-Fi network, particularly if you have a laptop computer with wireless capability. Setting up your wireless network with a wireless router and your Comcast high-speed Internet modem affords you a high level of mobility that isn't found with wired connections. Putting together the Comcast Wi-Fi network is a relatively straightforward task that should take no more than 30 minutes to complete.
Set up your Comcast high-speed Internet modem in the desired location. Make sure the modem is connected to an AC power source. Connect the coaxial cable to the back of the modem and connect the other end of the coaxial cable to the cable outlet jack.
Connect the RJ-45 Ethernet cable to the back of the Comcast high-speed Internet modem. Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to the marked Ethernet port located at the back of the wireless router. Make sure the wireless router is connected to an AC power source. Connect another Ethernet cable to one of the four boards located at the back of the wireless router. Connect the other hand of the Ethernet cable into the marked Ethernet port located at the back or along the side of the computer.
Open your preferred web browser. Type the IP address of your wireless router into the URL address field and press "Enter." The IP address is located either underneath the wireless router itself or in the user's manual that came with your wireless router. Enter your wireless router's username and password when you reach the authentication screen. If your router comes with an installation CD, you can use it to set up the router instead of doing it manually. Insert the CD into your computer's CD-ROM drive and follow the instructions on screen.
At the wireless router's setup page, make sure the Internet connection type is set to "automatic configuration (DHCP)." The wireless router will automatically obtain the proper settings for your Comcast Wi-Fi connection. Give your new Comcast Wi-Fi connection a unique wireless network name (SSID) and save the settings.
Locate the wireless router's security page. Choose the type of wireless encryption you want to use and set a password for the encrypted connection. Save the settings and exit the setup page.
Open your computer's network connection utility. Select the SSID of your Comcast Wi-Fi connection and click "Connect." Open your web browser and navigate to a web page to make sure the Wi-Fi connection is working properly.
