How to Use a Laptop Keyboard on a Desktop

By Heath Wright

Technological advances in the synergy between computers, networks and servers have enabled computer technicians to control other computers as if they were sitting in front of them. Many programs available online for free or a small fee enable this procedure for Windows, Mac, iPhone and Linux. With such a program you can use your laptop keyboard as a keyboard for your desktop; however, this is just the tip of the iceberg of what is possible with these programs.

Step 1

Log on to the Internet with your desktop and laptop. Go to a website such as TeamViewer.com, Anyplace-Control.com or Remote-Desktop-Control.com and download the program onto your laptop and then your desktop. Follow the steps in the installation process specific to the program you downloaded.

Step 2

Click on "Configure Permanent Access to this Computer." Create a password between the desktop and the laptop.

Step 3

Establish the connection between the laptop and the desktop by entering the ID into the "ID Field" box; the ID is found in the session box on the program you downloaded to your laptop. Click on "Connect" to partner on your laptop. Enter the password; you can now access the desktop via the laptop and use the keyboard and mouse to control the desktop.
