How to Use a Template for Staples Labels

By Christina Shaffer

Staples is one of the leading office supply companies and offers a variety of company-manufactured products, including labeling supplies. Though Staples does not offer a label design program, the company encourages customers to use Avery and HP template programs to personalize and print their label designs. Avery DesignPro and HP Template Wizard software is free and can be downloaded online. Though each program is compatible with Staples products, Avery DesignPro offers a larger selection of label templates.

Avery DesignPro

Step 1

Go to the official Avery website and download Avery DesignPro 5. Next, install the software on your computer. After installing the software, the program should automatically open. If the program does not open, go to "Start" and click on "All Programs." Next, click on "Avery Dennison" and select "DesignPro 5."

Step 2

Click on the "Step-by-Step Wizard" icon, which is located on the left side of the DesignPro menu. The wizard will walk you through the process of creating a design for your label.

Step 3

Locate the Avery product number on Staples label package. Next, enter the product number in the "Enter Product Number" field and click "Find." Double-click on the highlighted product and click "Next." The "Project Wizard" window will appear on your screen.

Step 4

Select one of the available template designs and click "Next." A preview of the template will appear on the screen.

Step 5

Click on one of the text options, which is located in the "Click the Item to Edit" tool pane on the right side of the screen. Depending on your label and chosen label template, the name of the text option will differ. When you click on the text option, you can type your text in the "Edit Your Text" box. Select a font from the drop-down menu and click on the "A" button to change the color of your text.

Step 6

Click on the graphic option if you would like to change the image in your chosen template. Next, click on the "Replace Current Image" button. You will have the option to select an image on your computer or use a clip-art image in the program's graphics library. Click "OK" when you've selected your image.

Step 7

Click the "Finish" button when you've completed your label design. The "Review Your Project" window will appear on the screen. Click the "Preview and Print" button to view and print your design.

HP Template Wizard

Step 1

Download and install the HP Template Wizard. The HP Template Wizard is installed in the Microsoft Word toolbar.

Step 2

Go to "Start," click "All Programs" and open Microsoft Word.

Step 3

Click on the "Add-Ins" toolbar tab and select HP Template Wizard.

Step 4

Scroll through the "Product Type and Size" list, select your labeling product and click "Next."

Step 5

Enter your text in the "Name and Address" field and click the "New Document" button. A new Word document will open with your label design. If you would like to edit the text, highlight the text with your mouse and click on the font drop-down menu to change the style of your text. Click on the "A" button to change the font color.

Step 6

Click on the round Microsoft Office button and select "Print."
