How to Use APA Format in Powerpoint

APA style formatting can be used in PowerPoint presentations to document references that are used by an author. APA style has a number of guidelines for using in-text citations that apply to both written documents and to electronic presentations. This tutorial shows how to use APA standards in documenting four of the most widely used reference types. By completing this tutorial, users can correctly cite material in PowerPoint presentations using one of the most recognized and widely accepted documentation styles.

Using APA Citations in PowerPoint Presentations

Step 1

Type or paste the selected quotation from the previously selected book on the appropriate PowerPoint page as in Image 1. The citation format for quotes taken from printed materials is: author, year, page number. Image 1 also shows the way books are formatted on the reference page.

Step 2

Type or paste a paraphrased segment from the previously selected magazine on the appropriate PowerPoint page as in Image 2. The citation format for printed materials when the author is paraphrased is: author and year. Image 2 also shows the way magazines are formatted on the reference page.

Step 3

Type or paste the selected quotation from the previously selected journal on the appropriate PowerPoint page as in Image 3. The citation format for printed materials when the author's name is used in a paraphrased section is to record the year the quotation was made. Image 3 also shows the way journals are formatted on the reference page.

Step 4

Type or paste the selected quotation from the previously selected electronic source on the appropriate PowerPoint page as in Image 4. The citation format for electronic materials uses page numbers when available. When page numbers are not available, the paragraph count from the nearest headings is used as part of the citation. Image 4 also shows the way electronic sources are formatted on the reference page.

Step 5

Create a reference page based on the citations used in the PowerPoint presentation. Reference pages are alphabetical and follow the formats based on the type of document being referenced as displayed on previous images.

Tips & Warnings

  • Writers that are copying two or more words from a reference should use a citation to avoid being accused of plagiarism.
  • Paraphrasing should be done carefully to maintain the author's original meaning.
