Instagram is taking a much-needed step to become a safer place. Instagram co-founder and CEO Kevin Systrom announced in a blog post a new feature that will filter bullying comments intended to harass or upset people.
The new filter gives users the option to hide comments that attack a person's appearance or character, as well as threatening comments. The filter has been automatically turned on for everyone, but can be disabled in the Comment Controls center in the app.
Systrom noted that Instagam has always prohibited bullying, but the new filter is the social media platform's way of continuing its commitment to "keeping Instagram an inclusive, supportive place for all voices."
Last year, Instagram implemented a filter that blocks certain offensive comments, but if you have kids on Instagram, or are on Instagram yourself, you probably know that it doesn't work in every case.
According to Systrom, he and co-founder Mike Krieger have always tried to make Instagram a "safe place for self-expression and to foster kindness within the community." Hopefully this new filter will do better at protecting the Instagram community from bullies and trolls.
