How to Change Settings in an AT&T U-Verse Router

AT&T U-verse is AT&T's fiber-optic cable TV, digital phone and high-speed Internet service line. There are currently (as of October 2011) one residential gateway and one wireless router branded for use with AT&T high-speed Internet service. There's the 2Wire DSL gateway model 2701HG-B and the Motorola Wi-Fi business router model 3347. Similar to a router, the gateway is a device used to connect multiple Internet-ready devices to the same network. To change the settings on your AT&T U-verse gateway or router you must access the device's graphic user interface.

2Wire Gateway

Step

Go to the primary computer in your network. This is the computer the gateway was initially hooked up to. It is connected to the gateway with an Ethernet cable.

Step

Launch the computer's Web browser.

Step

Type "192.168.1.254" in the browser's address bar. Press "Enter" to open the gateway's user interface.

Step

Modify the gateway's settings to suit your preference. For example, to change the device's network name (SSID) and security key (WEP), go to the "Home Network" tab. Click "Wireless Settings." Make your modifications.

Step

Modify the router's settings to suit your preference. For example, to change the device's network name (SSID) and security key (WEP), click the "Wireless" link. Check the box next to "Enable Wireless" (if prompted) and make your modifications. Click the yellow triangle in the top right corner. Click "Save and Restart."
