How Do I Transfer Norton Anti-Virus to a New Computer?

If you replaced your old computer or purchased a second one and want to protect your personal information and important data, transfer the Norton license from the old PC to the new one or purchase a new Norton license. To transfer the old license to your new Norton AntiVirus 2014 product, you must first remove the license from the old PC. You can then download and install the product from your Norton account; the product activates automatically on the new PC.

Transfer the License

Step 1

Open the Norton Subscriptions page (link in Resources) and log in to your account using the email and password you provided when you purchased the license or activated the product.

Step 2

Select the "Norton AntiVirus" product from the Services section and then click the trash can icon next to the name of the old computer in the Manage My Installs section to remove the license from the old PC.

Step 3

Click the "Download" button and then click the "Agree & Download" button to download the installer, about 200MB, on your new computer.

Step 4

Save the file on your hard drive and double-click it to start the setup wizard. If you are using Internet Explorer, click the "Run" button to launch the wizard immediately.

Step 5

Click "Agree & Install" to install Norton AntiVirus 2014 on the new computer. The process usually takes less than a minute, and the product is activated automatically.

Purchase a New License

Step 1

Open the "Norton AntiVirus 2014" page (link in Resources), select the type of license you wish to purchase and then click the "Buy Now" button. You can purchase a license for one, two or three years, and the license can activate Norton AntiVirus 2014 on a single computer. Purchase several licenses if you need to activate the product on multiple devices. If you purchased a Norton CD or DVD, the product key is printed on a card or sticker inside the box.

Step 2

Uncheck the "Yes, renew my subscription automatically" box to prevent Norton from renewing the subscription automatically every time the license expires, then click to confirm. If you do want this option, just continue.

Step 3

Click the "Continue to Secure Checkout," provide the required information and complete the purchase, at which point Norton sends the product key to your email address. Check your spam folder if you can't find the email.

Step 4

Download a trial version of Norton AntiVirus 2014 from the "Norton AntiVirus - Download 30-day Free Trial" page (link in Resources) or from your Norton account, and then install the product. Install the software from the CD or DVD if you purchased the product at a local retail store.

Step 5

Launch Norton AntiVirus and then click "Renew" or "Activate Now" in the Subscription Status section. Click the "I have a key or code to enter" link and type the product key in the text field. If you purchased the product online, open the email you received from Norton and locate the product key. If you purchased the product at a retail store, locate the product key on the sticker or card inside the box. Click "Next," follow the instructions and click "Done."

Tip

You can remove the Norton AntiVirus 2014 product from the old computer after you remove its license.

If you can't log in to your Norton account, open the "Forgot Your Password" (link in Resources), type the email address and click "Continue." Follow the instructions in the password reset email to reset your password.

You need at least 300MB of available disk space on the system drive to install Norton AntiVirus 2014.

Remove other anti-virus programs before attempting to install Norton AntiVirus 2014. If the setup wizard detects such programs, it prompts you to remove them. Although you can install Norton without removing them, running more than one anti-virus program may generate conflicts and leave areas of your computer vulnerable.
