How to Add Smileys to Pidgin

By Chris Hoffman

Pidgin is an instant messaging program that connects to a variety of instant messaging networks including AIM, MSN, Yahoo, ICQ and Google Talk. Pidgin includes a default smiley theme and supports user-created smiley themes. Pidgin smiley themes replace common smiley faces such as ":)," ":(" and ";)" with graphical images. Add smileys to Pidgin by downloading them then dragging and dropping them onto the "Themes" window.

Step 1

Download a new Pidgin smiley theme (see Resources). Click on "My Computer," then navigate to the location where you saved the theme.

Step 2

Open Pidgin by clicking "Start," "All Programs" and "Pidgin."

Step 3

Open Pidgin's Preferences window by clicking "Tools" and "Preferences" in the Pidgin buddy list window.

Step 4

Click the "Themes" tab at the left side of the "Preferences" window.

Step 5

Add a smiley theme to Pidgin by dragging and dropping it from Windows Explorer into the "Smiley Theme" list in the "Preferences" window.

Step 6

Use the new smiley theme by clicking the "Smiley Theme" list, clicking a smiley theme from the list and clicking "Close" in the "Preferences" window.

Tips & Warnings

  • Pidgin smiley themes only affect what you see on your computer: people you're talking to can't see them.
