How to Change the DirecTV Remote From IR to RF

By Frank Gates

DirecTV remotes come in three wireless modes. The infrared, or IR, remote is a line-of-sight device that must "see" the DirecTV receiver to function. The second is the Radio Frequency, or RF, remote that can function behind walls and around corners. The third is the combined Infrared/Radio Frequency, or IR/RF, remote, which provides the best of both worlds because the user can configure this remote to switch back and forth between the IR and RF transmitter modes.

Step 1

Change the remote's transmitter from IR to RF, starting with writing down the last six digits of the DirecTV receiver ID (RID), which you'll find on the back of the receiver or inside its CAM access door beside the reset button.

Step 2

Select “DirecTV,” “AV1” or “AV2" on the remote with the slide switch on top of the remote.

Step 3

Press and simultaneously hold “Mute” and “Select” until the green light on the remote flashes twice, then release “Mute” and “Select.”

Step 4

Enter “961” using the number keys. The green light will flash two times.

Step 5

Press and release the “Chan Up” rocker button, and you'll see the green light flash twice again.

Step 6

Enter the last six digits of the RID number that you obtained earlier from the back of the DirecTV receiver.

Step 7

Press and release “Select,” and the green light will flash twice. The RF transmitter has now been activated.

Tips & Warnings

  • The DirecTV receiver must operate in the same wireless mode as the remote, whether it's IR or RF.
