How to Clear Windows Media Center

By Dustin Thornton

Periodic computer cleaning and maintenance are essential to keeping Windows running smoothly. To clear the downloaded guide data and tuner setup in Windows Media Center you must delete the associated database file. This effectively fixes minor problems that Windows Media Center may be experiencing and resets the Media Center TV setup to its original configuration. The process is relatively simple, does not require any special computer knowledge or skills, and only takes approximately 10 minutes.

Step 1

Press "Ctrl," "Alt" and "Del" simultaneously. Click "Task Manager" to open the Windows Task Manager.

Step 2

Select the "Services" tab in the Task Manager and click the "Services" button in the bottom-right corner of the window to open the "Services" window.

Step 3

Locate the "Windows Media Center Receiver" and "Windows Media Center Scheduler" services in the list. Highlight each service and click the "Stop" hyperlink on the left-hand side of the window.

Step 4

Close the "Services" window and reopen the Windows Task Manager. Select the "Processes" tab.

Step 5

Click the "Description" field at the top of the list of items to sort the list. Locate all items associated with Windows Media Center. Select each item and click "End Process." Close the Task Manager.

Step 6

Click "Start" and select "Computer." Navigate to the folder "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\ehome."

Step 7

Locate the file with the prefix "mcepg" in its name, such as "mcepg1-5-0.db." Note that it is a ".db" file extension. Highlight the file and press the "Del" key. Click "Yes" to confirm the deletion. Restart the computer.
