How to Convert VGA Output to HDMI Input

By Arn Goldman

The VGA connection, short for Video Graphics Array, is a 15-pin connection used for connections to video cards, and it’s most commonly used for PC and laptop outputs. The increase in popularity of newer HDTV units has led to a demand for components that allow computers with VGA outputs to connect with TVs with HDMI inputs. Connecting your older VGA device to a monitor or television with an HDMI input is easy, but it may require some spending on your part.

Things You'll Need

  • Laptop or Computer with VGA Output
  • VGA Cable
  • VGA to HDMI Converter Box
  • HDMI Cable
  • HDMI Input Device, such as an HD TV

Step 1

Purchase a VGA to HDMI Converter Box. (You can find a link below for a list of recommended models.)

Step 2

Locate your VGA cable; you should have received one with your computer.

Step 3

Plug your VGA cable into the VGA Output on your computer.

Step 4

Connect the other side of the VGA Cable to the VGA Input on your VGA to HDMI Converter Box.

Step 5

Plug your HDMI Output into the VGA to HDMI Converter Box.

Step 6

Connect the HDMI input end of the HDMI cable to your television or monitor. When your computer and HD Device are turned on, the computer will now display on the HD device.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your HDTV or monitor support 1080p, ensure that the VGA to HDMI Converter Box you purchase allows for 1080p playback; many cheaper models are capped at 720p.
