How to Use the HDMI Port on a Laptop

By Stephen A. Powell

High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) is a conduit through which devices can transmit and receive high-definition (HD) audio and video between external sources and receivers. Laptops with HDMI ports allow you to project high-quality video and audio onto HD-capable devices such as televisions and audio receivers. Using your laptop's HDMI port properly only takes seconds and makes the device a powerful multimedia hub.

Things You'll Need

  • HDMI cable

Step 1

Insert one end of an HDMI cable into your laptop's HDMI port.

Step 2

Insert the other end of the HDMI cable into an available HDMI port on a monitor or receiver such as an HD television, video recorder or audio playback hardware.

Step 3

Set your connected monitor or receiver to the desired input mode or channel, such as "AUX" or "Line In" to receive HD audio and/or video from the laptop. Conversely, you may set the monitor or receiver to any desired output channel if you intend to receive its content on the laptop.

Step 4

Play the laptop's HD video or audio content if you intend to display it on the connected monitor or receiver. Conversely, launch your laptop's TV tuner or recording software if you intend to receive or capture HD video or audio on the computer.
