How to Fix the Ask Box on Tumblr

By Brandy Alexander

The Tumblr Ask Box lets visitors send questions to you by clicking a link on your blog, but if you do not set it up properly, the Ask Box does not work. When the box is clicked in these circumstances, common problems include the browser displaying a "URL Not Found" error message, or doing nothing at all. To fix these issues, make sure you have the right Tumblr settings enabled and that your Ask Box code is entered correctly.

Step 1

Log in to your Tumblr account and click the name of your blog in the menu bar at the top. Click the "Settings" link that displays on the right side.

Step 2

Scroll down to the Ask section and see that the "Let people ask questions" box is clicked. If not, click the box and and then click the "Save preferences" button at the bottom of the page. This feature must be clicked to allow the Ask Box to work properly.

Step 3

Click the "Customize appearance" button on the right and then click the "Edit HTML" button that appears in the left column to display your blog's code. Find the code that inserts the Ask Box element your page. This data typically looks like this example:{block:AskEnabled}

  • Ask Box
  • {/block:AskEnabled}

    Step 4

    Look at the URL in the opening anchor tag and make sure it is entered correctly. The Ask Box address is formatted as "" and your own Tumblr username replaces the "your_username" entry. Your complete code now looks like the following:{block:AskEnabled}

  • Ask Box
  • {/block:AskEnabled}

    Step 5

    Click the "Update preview" button at the top to test your new Ask Box in the preview screen on the right, and then click the "Appearance" button in the top-left corner. Click the "Save" button that appears in the menu to publish your fixes.
