The HD DVD format has been discontinued since 2008 but it is still possible to play high-definition (HD) DVDs using the Blu-ray disk (BD) format. It is not necessary to be technically savvy to play HD DVDs using Blu-Ray because Blu-Ray works a lot like standard DVD players except that it also plays HD DVDs. You do however have to have a technologically advanced hardware such as an HDTV, a Blu-ray disc player and High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) cables.

Step 1

Plug a Blu-ray disc player to your HDTV using an HDMI cable. Note that the HDMI cable is capable of transmitting both high-definition video and high-resolution audio so you don't need more than just an HDMI cable. HDMI cables are available online and at any electronics store.

Step 2

Insert a Blu-ray disc into the Blu-ray disc player. Note that only a Blu-ray disc is capable of playing this type of HD DVD though these special players can also play standard DVDs and even music CDs. Also note that Blu-ray disc players come in the form of computer disc drives, video game systems, such as the PlayStation 3, and individual disc players.

Step 3

Power on your HDTV if it isn't already on and press "Play" on the Blu-ray disc player. Note that your TV has to be on the HDMI input mode though most modern television sets will change automatically when you press "Play" on the player.
