How to Make a Smiley Face in Outlook

Outlook allows you to include smiley faces in your email messages.

Microsoft Outlook is a part of the Microsoft Office application suite, and it is used to organize and share personal and business information. Microsoft Outlook is commonly used as an email client, but includes other useful organizational features and tools such as a calendar and a task manager. Using smiley faces, commonly referred to as emoticons, can help you add a personal touch to your email messages. Smiley faces and other emoticons can be made in Microsoft Outlook by using either the symbol menu, the Windows character map tool or by typing the correct corresponding character code on your keyboard.

Symbol Menu

Step 1

Open Microsoft Outlook and create a new email message by clicking the "New" button on the Outlook toolbar. Select "New Mail Message" from the drop-down list.

Step 2

Click on the "Insert" tab, select the "Symbol" icon and choose a smiley face from the drop-down menu. The smiley face symbol will be inserted into your email. If the smiley face you want to use is not available, click on the "More Symbols" button at the bottom of the symbols window.

Step 3

Select the "Wingdings" font from the font drop-down list in the More Symbols window. Click on the smiley face or symbol you wish to use and it will be inserted into your email. Close the Symbols dialog to finish typing your email.

Windows Character Map

Step 1

Click the Windows "Start" menu, choose "All Programs," select "Accessories" and click "System Tools." Click "Character Map" to open the Windows Character Map.

Step 2

Select "Wingdings" from the Font drop-down menu to show the Wingdings font symbols. Double-click on the smiley face you want to add to the text field under the symbols window. Click the "Select" button to highlight the selected smiley face and then click "Copy" to add the smiley to your clipboard.

Step 3

Return to Microsoft Outlook and click inside of the email message body area. Paste the smiley face from your clipboard into your email by pressing "Ctrl-V" on your keyboard.

Character Codes

Step 1

Hold down the "Alt" button on your keyboard and use the numeric pad to type in the corresponding character codes to the smiley face you want. After the symbol appears, highlight the symbol and change the font to "Wingdings" using the top "Font" toolbar in Microsoft Outlook.

Step 2

Type "074" while holding down the "Alt" key to produce a capital "J." Highlight the letter and change its font to Wingdings to produce a happy smiley face.

Step 3

Type "075" while holding down the "Alt" key to produce a capital "K." Highlight the letter and change its font to Wingdings to produce a disappointed or indifferent smiley face.

Step 4

Type "076" while holding down the "Alt" key to produce a capital "L." Highlight the letter and change its font to Wingdings to produce a sad smiley face.

In the 2002 and later versions of Microsoft Outlook, you can make these smiley faces by typing ":-)" or ":-(" or ":-|" with the "AutoCorrect" feature enabled.
