You've probably been hearing the word MagSafe being thrown around a lot lately, but what is it exactly?
MagSafe is magnetic technology from Apple that's built into the iPhone 12. It allows for fast and complete wireless charging and an entirely new ecosystem of iPhone 12 accessories for easy attachment and faster wireless charging.

In other words, it makes life with your iPhone 12 a lot more seamless. It was originally used by Apple as a safety feature for its MacBook chargers before those switched to USB-C.
MagSafe is also exciting because it unlocks the potential for future iPhones to not have a Lightening port at all, leaving room inside the phones for things like bigger batteries, as well as better waterproofing capabilities.
MagSafe wireless charging and accessory functionality is also present on the iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max.
How does MagSafe work?
MagSafe's series of magnets around the iPhone 12's internal charging coil sense a charger and snap it into place on the back of the iPhone. The magnetic force keeps the charger in place, which makes it a lot easier to use than Qi chargers, which generally need a lot of wiggling to charge correctly. (If you know you know.)
You can see how third-party manufacturer Belkin's 3-in-1 Wireless Charger with MagSafe 15W holds the iPhone at a 45-degree angle.
Here's some reassuring news: MagSafe will only attach to other compatible MagSafe accessories, so other magnets won't interfere or annoyingly get stuck to your phone.
How fast can MagSafe charge?
Wireless charging was first introduced by Apple with the iPhone 8, but the speed couldn't get any faster than 7.5w. Ultimately, 7.5w was an improvement, but it certainly wasn't impressively fast.
MagSafe doubles the speed to 15w, which brings the iPhone 12 models up to speed, literally and figuratively, with fast-charging Android phones.
To maximize the MagSafe capable speeds, you have to use an Apple-approved charger, as well as a case with MagSafe. Apple's own MagSafe charger can be purchased here for $39.
