Instagram is introducing a new feature that will let you like someone's Story without sending a DM. As you probably already know, any response that was previously sent to a Story would automatically show up in their DM box — whether it was an emoji response or a written message. But now your responses can be less intrusive.
Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, explained the new feature in a video. "So now, as you go through Stories, between send message and that little paper airplane, there will be a heart icon. And if you tap on it, it'll send the author of that story a like, and that like will show up in the viewer sheet, not in your DM thread with them." You can access your own viewer sheet by viewing your Story. People who publicly view your Stories won't see a like count.

The idea behind the new feature is to allow users to show more support for each other, but also to clean up DMs to make them look less chaotic. It looks like the feature hasn't rolled out for all users yet, so if you don't see the new heart icon yet, it's on the way.
