Controlling the brightness of your HP laptop screen can save battery power or just make the screen easier to look at. If you are not connected to AC power, the brighter your computer monitor is, the faster the battery will drain. You can get more mileage out of your battery by dimming the screen. Alternatively, if you are watching a movie or working in a document with a darker background, a brighter screen makes it easier to see items on the screen. Changing the brightness of your HP laptop screen can be done with a simple key combination.
Hold down the "Windows" key, then press "M" to minimize any windows that are open on the screen and display the Windows desktop.
Hold down the "Fn" key.
Press the corresponding "F" key marked with a sun icon and an arrow pointing up to the right of the icon to make the screen brighter, or press the corresponding "F" key with a sun icon and an arrow pointing down to the right of the icon to make the screen dimmer. Each time you press the corresponding "F" key, the screen will get slightly brighter or darker. Alternatively, hold down the corresponding "F" key to rapidly make the screen brighter or dimmer.
Typically, the "F7" key makes the screen brighter and the "F8" key makes the screen dimmer, but this is not always the case, and the corresponding "F" keys are different on some models. However, the icons used to represent making the screen brighter and dimmer are always the same.
