How to Change Ringbacks on an iPhone
A ringback is a sound your callers hear when they call your iPhone and are waiting for you to pick up. The method for managing ringback tones on an iPhone varies between carriers because ringbacks play over your wireless network instead of your device. Depending on your carrier, you can buy ringbacks, set a default tone and assign different tones to different callers from a Web interface or using an app on your device. Since ringback tones play over your wireless network, most carriers charge a subscription fee in addition to the price for ringback tones.
Visit the AT&T Ringback Tones website and click “Manage Tones” (link in Resources). Enter your phone number in the pop-up window and click “Get Pin Code.” In a few seconds, when you receive the pin code in a text message, enter the number in the pop-up window and click “Verify.”
Select a ringback tone from the main menu or click “My Tones” to view the ringbacks you already own. When you select a tone, it opens in a preview window so that you can hear it before buying it or assigning it to a caller.
Choose “Set Default Day” or “Set Default Night” to make the tone your default for daytime or nighttime calls. Alternatively, click “My Callers” and choose a contact to assign the tone to a specific caller. Your changes immediately take effect.
Visit the Verizon Media Store, point the cursor to “Manage” and select “My Ringback Tones” (link in Resources). Enter your phone number in the pop-up window and click “Sign In.”
Click “Ringback Tones” and select a tone from the main menu to preview and purchase a ringback. If you already have ringbacks in your library, you can skip this step.
Left-click and drag a ringback tone from your library and drop it over My Default in the sidebar. Alternatively, drop the ringback tone over a contact's name to assign the tone only to that caller. To add a contact, click “Contacts,” select “New Contact” and enter the contact's name and phone number in the pop-up window. Your contact list displays the new name, and you can drag ringback tones to the contact.
Download Sprint Music Plus from the App Store (link in Resources). Open the app and tap “New to Ringback Tones” to enter your account information.
Browse through the ringbacks in the Store tab or tap “My Library” to manage the ringbacks you already own. The first time you buy a ringback, you must agree to a monthly subscription fee, so tap “Accept” to confirm the charges.
Select a ringback tone from the Store tab or My Library. On the Set as Default screen, tap “Yes” if you want only the selected tone to play when you receive calls. To shuffle all the tones in your library, tap “My Library” and select “Shuffle.” Alternatively, assign ringbacks to specific callers by tapping the “Contacts” tab, selecting a contact and choosing a ringback.
Tips & Warnings
- Unlike ringtones, ringback tones are a service, and most carriers charge your account for the full price of a ringback when one expires. When you buy a ringback, you're only purchasing a temporary license to play the tone. Many carriers set subscriptions and ringback licenses to auto-renew. To prevent ringback auto-renewal, cancel the subscription from the settings menu on your carrier's website or iPhone app.
