XPS is a file format created by Microsoft and known as an XML Paper Specification File, according to File Info. It is a description file, similar to a PDF file, that contains information about the layout, printing and appearance of a document. Microsoft also created XML files, or data files formatted like text files for sharing information. While XPS files are not widely compatible, Microsoft Word can convert them to other file types, including XML, rather easily.
