How to Copy & Paste a Blank Space

By Craig Witt

All modern operating systems allow you to copy text or images to a common clipboard and then insert that content into another application using the "Paste" command. Although this is a straightforward task in most instances, copying and pasting a blank space can be problematic if an application does not provide "Copy" and "Paste" menu items, or if your selected font is so small that the space cannot be easily selected with your cursor. Whether you use a Windows or Mac OS computer, you can work around these limitations by using a pair of built-in keyboard shortcut commands.

Windows

Step 1

Open the application or document containing the blank space you want to copy.

Step 2

Click directly to the left of the blank space, press and hold the "Shift" key and then press the right-arrow key once to highlight the blank space.

Step 3

Press the "Ctrl" and "C" keys simultaneously to execute the "Copy" command and transfer a copy of the space to the clipboard.

Step 4

Open the application or document where you want the blank space pasted.

Step 5

Click at the position where you want to insert the space and then press the "Ctrl" and "V" keys simultaneously to execute the "Paste" command.
