How to Find Email Settings

Email clients such as Windows Mail, Mac Mail and Outlook contain an interface that allows you to send, receive and manage your email accounts. To perform these functions, the applications need to have the correct settings. These settings allow the application to communicate with the email servers associated with your email account. At times, you may need view these settings in order to update or troubleshoot your client, a process that takes a few moments to complete.

Mac Mail

Step 1

Launch your Mac Mail application.

Step 2

Click "Mail" in the main menu bar. Scroll down and click "Preferences."

Step 3

Click the email account that you want to see the settings of in the left column. Click the "Account Information" tab to view the email settings on the account.

Step 4

Click the "Mailbox Behaviors" and the "Advanced" tabs to view how the application handles email and how it communicates with email servers.

Windows Mail

Step 1

Launch Windows Mail.

Step 2

Click "Tools" in the main menu bar. Scroll down and click "Accounts."

Step 3

Highlight the account that you want to view the settings of and click the "Properties" button.

Step 4

Click the "General" tab to view the name, email address and organization associated with the account. Click the "Servers" tab to view the server settings on the account. Select the "Connection" tab to view how the application is connected to the Internet and check the "Security" to view the certificate information. Click the "Advanced" tab to view the server port settings.

Outlook 2007

Step 1

Launch your Outlook 2007 application.

Step 2

Click "Tools" in the main menu bar. Scroll down and click "Account Settings."

Step 3

Click the "Email" tab and highlight the account that you want to view. Click the "Change ..." button.

Step 4

Click the "General" tab to view the name, name of the servers and login information associated with the account. Click the "Outgoing Server" to view how the account is set up on the outgoing server. Select the "Connection" tab to view how the application is connect to the Internet and click the "Advanced" tab to view the server port settings.
