How to Find the IP Address of a Business

By Foye Robinson

An Internet protocol (IP) address is a unique number assigned to a computer when it connects to the Internet. It consists of a series of numbers separated by periods (also called a "dotted quad"). There are two relatively easy ways to find the IP address of a business or organization.

Finding IP Address Manually

Step 1

Click on "Start," then "Run" on your PC.

Step 2

Type "cmd" in the text box and press "OK." You will be directed to the Command Prompt window, which may look similar to: "C:\>" or "C:\Documents and Settings\User>."

Step 3

Type in the following information: "ping"

Step 4

Replace "" with the organization's actual domain name. Then press the "Enter" key. The IP address for the business will be displayed on your screen.

Step 5

Close out of the Command Prompt window to return to your main screen.

Finding IP Address Online

Step 1

Go to an IP address locator online (see Resources).

Step 2

Type in the website or domain for the business you're checking on.

Step 3

Press the "Enter" key to retrieve the company's IP address.
