Serial numbers can generally be located on the underneath side of laptop computers.

Finding the serial number on a laptop is tricky if you don't know where to look. Laptops generally have several tags containing various codes. On a Dell laptop, the serial number is located on the bottom of, or underneath, the computer. The serial number identifies a laptop and is used as proof of ownership. You will need to provide your serial number to the Dell support team if you ever have a technical problem with your laptop.

Step 2

Turn the laptop over.

Step 3

Look for a tag containing a five- to seven-character code that includes numbers and letters. This code is the computer's serial number. The tag is located near the middle of the back of the computer, on a thin white strip. On Dell laptops, the serial number is also referred to as the service tag. You will know it is the correct label, because it contains the phrase "service tag."
