How to Hook Up Your Camera to Your Computer for Live View Mode

By Jason Taetsch

The Live View Mode feature of your digital camera exports the image from the camera's lens to an external display, such as your TV or your computer. Connect the camera to your computer to use the camera to record video directly to your computer's hard drive. Windows comes with the Windows Live Movie Maker utility that includes the necessary utilities to display the picture from your camera and record the footage to your hard drive.

Things You'll Need

  • USB data cable

Step 1

Plug one end of the USB cable into the "USB" jack on your camera.

Step 2

Insert the other end into an open USB port on the side of your computer.

Step 3

Turn on your camera and turn the "Mode" switch to the "Live View" option.

Step 4

Click "Start" and click "All Programs" on your computer. Click the "Windows Live Movie Maker" option and click the "Webcam Video" option to display the image from the camera on your computer's monitor. Click the "Record" button to begin capturing the image from the camera's lens to your hard drive.
