How to Import and Export Bookmarks from Firefox

By Techwalla Contributor

The Firefox Web browser includes tools to organize your favorite websites into bookmarks. The bookmark functionality lets you easily import and export bookmarks in a standard HTML file. Exporting bookmarks works well to back up your bookmarks, import them in another browser or share them with other people. The standard HTML file exported can even be used on a website. The import function accepts HTML files created by other browsers or by Firefox on another computer.

Things You'll Need

  • Computer
  • Firefox browser
  • Bookmarks

Step 1

Open Firefox. Click the Bookmarks menu and select the "Show All Bookmarks" option. Click the "Import and Backup" menu at the top of the window that appears, it looks like a star icon.

Step 2

Click the "Export HTML" option. Select and file name for the exported bookmarks. This same bookmarks library window lets you import bookmarks.

Step 3

Click the "Import HTML" option in the Import and Backup menu. Click "Next" or "Continue" depending on your operating system. Select the file in the window that appears and click "Open."

Tips & Warnings

  • The "Backup" option in the Import and Backup menu only works to back up your bookmarks for Firefox. If you restore from a Backup file it will delete all your existing bookmarks. Use the import and export functions to transfer bookmarks to or from another browser to avoid deleting your bookmarks.
