How to Install a Caller ID Device

By Techwalla Electronics Editor

There are a few different ways to install caller ID on your home telephone. If you have VoIP you can route it through your computer by using a special caller ID card in the computer. You can also buy a telephone with the caller ID function built into it or you can install a separate caller ID device. Combined with caller ID service from your local phone company, a device can give you a head's up as to who's calling you!

Things You'll Need

  • Electrical outlet
  • Triplex adapter (optional)
  • Modular wall jack
  • Caller ID device(s)
  • Telephone cord
  • Answering machine (optional)

Install to a Single-Line Phone

Step 1

Attach the AC power adapter to the caller ID device and plug it into an electrical outlet.

Step 2

Disconnect the telephone line from the phone jack on the wall. Take that cord and plug it into the port labeled "Phone Jack" on the back of the Caller ID device.

Step 3

Use the pre-attached telephone line cord on the caller ID device to connect it to the modular jack on the wall.

Install to an Answering Machine

Step 1

Attach the AC power adapter to the caller ID device and plug it into an electrical outlet.

Step 2

Set the answering machine to answer no earlier than the second ring. The Caller ID device needs at least two rings to record call information.

Step 3

Plug the pre-attached telephone cord into the wall jack.

Step 4

Use a different modular telephone wire to plug one end into the phone jack on the back of the caller ID device and the other end into the answering machine's "line out" jack.

Step 5

Use a third modular cord to connect the answering machine to the telephone. Plug one end into the phone jack on the back of the answering machine and the other end into the modular jack on your telephone or phone base.

Install to a Two-Line Phone

Step 1

Use two caller ID devices to record call information from a two-line phone by using a triplex adapter. Each device will receive ID information from one of the phone lines.

Step 2

Attach the AC power adapters to the caller ID devices and plug them into an electrical outlet.

Step 3

Identify the ports on the triplex adapter. There are three of them and each jack is labeled. There is a jack for Line 1 (L1), Line 2 (L2) and a combination port for both lines (L1 + L2).

Step 4

Disconnect the telephone cord from the wall jack and plug it into the L1 + L2 port on the adapter.

Step 5

Plug the adapter into the phone wall jack.

Step 6

Plug the pre-attached telephone line cord of one of the caller ID devices into the L1 jack on the adapter. Plug the pre-attached cord from the second Caller ID device in the L2 jack.

Tips & Warnings

  • Most caller ID devices have a battery backup to ensure that you continue to receive information in the event of a power outage. Make sure you install the batteries before installing the device.
