Using Emoji and text-based emoticons on Facebook inserts personality into your messages, status updates and photo captions. Facebook comes with several options for inserting text- and image-based characters into your communications. Emoji emoticons come in a variety of formats and make personalizing your posts an entertaining activity. If you don't like the default set of icons, you can install a new set from one of the options available in the Facebook shop.

Status Updates

While writing a status update, a set of toolbar icons displays beneath the text input area. Each of these icons provides a different function. The icon for inserting Emoji symbols looks like a smiley face. After composing your message, click the smiley face icon and select one of the options from the list. For example, select the "Feeling" option and select one of the emoticons that reflects your current mood. Additional options exist for using icons to inform others when traveling, watching a movie, drinking, eating and several other activities.

Facebook Messaging System.

The Facebook messaging system provides advanced functionality for using emoticons. When composing a message, select the smiley face icon and click one of the available tabs to select a category of emoticons. Click the shopping basket icon if you want to install additional emoticons from the Sticker Store. When you find a set of emoticons that you like, click the "Free" button to install the set. After installing a new set, you can select the tab and sort through the available icons to find an emoticon that best reflects your mood or intention.

Messenger App

On a mobile device, you can use the Facebook messenger app to send messages to your friends without having to log in to the Facebook website. The Facebook Messenger app works much the same way as the full website's messaging component. However, Emoji characters that you installed on the full Facebook website don't automatically appear in the Messenger app. When composing a message using the Messenger app, select the smiley face icon and choose an emoticon from the list of available options. Install additional icons by clicking the shopping basket and selecting the download link for any sets that you want to install.

Photo Captions

Photo captions don't support the image-based emoticons. You can still place emoticons in the comment area linked to each photo, but you need to use traditional text-based emoticons if you want to include one in the description. Hundreds of text-based images exist and you can either use a special characters keyboard or copy and paste the text-based images from another website or text application.

Operating System Keyboards

Using Windows 8.1, you can enable an Emoji keyboard to insert characters into your status updates. Enable the keyboard by right-clicking on the taskbar. Then, select "Toolbars" and click the "Touch Keyboard" option. Click the keyboard icon in the system tray and select the smiley face icon on the keyboard to show and select from a list of Emoji icons. On Mac OS X Mavericks, in any text field, press the "Command-Option-Space" keys on the keyboard and click the smiley face icon to show and choose from a list of Emoji.
