How to Merge BMP Images
Capturing something on film can be a difficult undertaking. Getting two perfect portraits together may be an impossibility. Instead of trying to re-shoot the photo, merge the two images together, using a computer graphics program. Whether you're combining a photograph, pieces of a digital logo, a cartoon or drawing, there are a number of software programs that make merging bitmap files (also known as BMP) as quick as a few clicks.
Things You'll Need
- Windows Paint
- Adobe Photoshop
- Microsoft Publisher
Open Paint, click the "Paint" button in the top-left corner of the screen and select "Open." Browse to the location of one of the BMP files to merge. Pull down the "All Picture Files" menu and select "Bitmap Files" to narrow the search. Double-click the image and it opens in the Paint workspace.
Click the "Select" button on the ribbon/toolbar. Click "Select all." Press the "Ctrl" and "C" keys on the keyboard to copy the selected BMP.
Repeat the "open and browse" process to open the other BMP file on the screen. If Paint asks whether to save the first photo, click "No."
Press the "Ctrl" and "V" keys on the keyboard to paste in the first BMP, merging the two together. Drag the pasted-in bitmap into place so the bottom one shows.
Click the "Paint" button and select "Save As." Type a new name for the merged image to avoid overwriting the non-merged original.
Open Photoshop, click the "File" menu and select "Open." Browse to the location of the first bitmap. Pull down the "Files of type" menu and select "BMP" to narrow the search. Double-click the name of the BMP file to open it on the Photoshop screen.
Repeat the "File" and "Open" process to open the second bitmap file, so both are showing in separate windows on the Photoshop workspace.
Press and hold down the "Ctrl" key on the keyboard and drag and drop one BMP file on top of the other. Drag it into place as preferred.
Resize a BMP file by clicking the "Edit" menu at the top of the screen, selecting "Transform," clicking "Scale" and shrinking the image into size.
Click the "File" menu and select "Save As." Give the merged photo a new name to protect the original.
Open Publisher and click the "Blank 8.5 x 11" button, the first option under the "Available Templates" screen.
Click the "Insert" tab at the top of the screen. Click the "Picture" button on the ribbon/toolbar directly below the tab.
Browse to the folder with the bitmap. Click the "All Pictures" menu and select "Windows Bitmap" to narrow the search to BMP files. Double-click an image and it appears on the Publisher workspace.
Repeat the process to open the other bitmap to merge with the first. Click once on either picture to give it focus, then drag it with the cursor around the page to merge it with the other.
Click the "File" tab at the top of the screen. Select "Save As," type a name for the combined image and save it to the computer.
