Your DirecTV remote can be programmed to control a variety of devices including DVRs, TVs, DVD players, sound bars and more. The approach you choose for how to program your DirecTV remote to a receiver will depend on what type of DirecTV remote you have and what type of device you are attempting to program the remote to.
Program DirecTV Remote to Receiver
Your universal DirecTV remote can be programmed to a variety of receivers including high definition (HD) and standard definition (SD) DVRs. How you program the DirecTV remote to a receiver will depend on whether your receiver is HD or SD. You can program an HD DVR or HD receiver by pressing the "Menu" button on the DirecTV remote and then pressing the arrow button to highlight "Settings & Help." Press the "Select" button, then select "Settings" followed by "Remote Control" and finally "Program Remote." Select your TV, audio or DVD device from the on-screen list and then follow DirecTV's directions to program the remote.
Video of the Day
You can program the remote to an SD DVR or receiver by pressing the "Menu" button on the remote and then selecting "Parental Favs & Setup." Select the "System Setup" option, then select "Remote or Remote Control" and then select "Program Remote." Select the device that you would like to program with the remote and then follow DirecTV's directions to complete the programming. Note that if your specific device is not listed, then you can use DirecTV's code lookup tool to find the five-digit code for your device.
Program DirecTV Genie Remote
The DirecTV Genie remote is known for being more advanced than the standard DirecTV remote. As such, the programming process is a bit different for the Genie. You can program the remote either automatically or manually. Program the DirecTV remote to your box automatically by pressing and holding the "Mute" and "Enter" buttons together while pointing the remote at the Genie device. Do not stop holding the buttons together until you see a green light that blinks twice on the remote. Wait for the TV to show an "Applying IR/RF setup" message on screen and then turn on the device that you are programming for. Press the "Menu" button on your remote and then select "Settings & Help," followed by "Settings, " then "Remote Control" and then select the "Program Remote" option. Select your device and then follow DirecTV's directions for programming the Genie remote to this device.
If the automatic method does not work for programming your Genie remote, then you should instead program it using the manual method. Begin by pressing and holding the "Select" and "Mute" buttons together while you point the remote at your Genie box. Keep holding these until you see a green light on the remote that blinks twice. Press the numbers "961" on your remote and then press the "Channel Up" arrow button. Press the "Enter" button and then press the "OK" button when you are told that the remote is now setup for RF. Turn on the device that you want to program to the remote and then press the "Menu" button on your Genie remote. Go to "Settings & Help," then "Settings," then "Remote Control," then "Program Remote." Select your device on screen and then follow DirecTV's on screen instructions for completing the process.
DirecTV Remote Not Working
Your DirecTV remote may stop working for a few different reasons. The first is that your remote has depleted batteries. Replace the batteries to fix this issue. The second potential cause for a remote that doesn't work is that the remote has become damaged. You'll need to contact DirecTV to replace the remote. The third possible reason is that the remote is not in the correct mode. You can put your DirecTV remote in either IR or RF mode. Check your manual to find out what mode your box needs the remote to be in and then select that mode on the remote.
Put your remote control into IR mode by pressing the "Mute" and "Select" buttons together and holding these down until you see a couple of blinks. Type in "961" and then press the "Channel Down" arrow button. Put your remote into RF mode by pressing and holding the "Select" and "Mute" buttons together until you see a couple of blinking lights. Type in "961" and then press the "Channel Up" arrow button. Enter your Receiver ID's last six numbers and then press "Select." This number is found on your receiver.
