Garmin's popular Nuvi line of global positioning systems (GPS) give drivers peace of mind when navigating unfamiliar territory with 3-D maps and audible turn-by-turn directions. You may notice that when you turn off your vehicle, the Nuvi displays a message, giving you a choice to power it down or leave it running on battery power. But you may not know how to turn off the device manually. This can come in handy when you want to leave the Nuvi charging in your car while you drive but don't need it turned on.
Locate the "power" button or switch on your Nuvi. The button or switch is situated on the top right or top left of the device, depending on the model.
Press the "power" button or slide the switch to the left, depending on the model. The 3700 series features a button while older models, such as the 200 series, include a switch that you must slide. If this does not work, proceed to step 3.
Hold down the "power" button or hold the switch in the "off" position for 10 seconds or until the device turns off. If your Nuvi is frozen, this action will power off the GPS.
