As of May 2011, OneNote is the newest application in the Microsoft Office suite of products and allows you to create journals, notebooks or note snippets from any application, window or website on your computer. Although the application is useful in collecting bits and pieces of information, creating screen shots and generally makes gathering informative notes much easier, the auto-launch features associated with OneNote can make the program a little annoying at times. Fortunately, you can prevent OneNote from popping up until you need to use the application.

Prevent OneNote From Running at Startup

Step 1

Click "Start," then "Control Panel." Click the "System and Security" link.

Step 2

Click "Administrative Tools" and wait for Windows Explorer to open and display a list of shortcuts to system utilities. Double-click the "System Configuration" shortcut link.

Step 3

Click the "Startup" tab after the "System Configuration" window appears on the screen. Locate the Microsoft OneNote option in the list of startup programs.

Step 4

Click the check box next to the Microsoft OneNote entry to disable it from running when Windows starts. Click the "OK" button to save the changes and close the "System Configuration" window.

Step 5

Restart the computer. Microsoft OneNote no longer loads when you boot into Windows. To start OneNote, you must click "Start," "All Programs," "Microsoft Office" and then "Microsoft OneNote."

Disable the OneNote Default Printer

Step 1

Click "Start," then "Printers and Devices."

Step 2

Locate your preferred default printer in the list of devices on the screen. Right-click the printer device, and click "Set as Default Printer" on the pop-up menu.

Step 3

Close the "Printers and Devices" window. Windows programs no longer prompt you to print to the OneNote virtual printer when printing documents. Instead, Windows prompts you to print to your preferred default printer. You can still print to OneNote by choosing it in the "Print" dialog box.
