How to Sync an iPad & an iPhone

By Mario Calhoun

The iTunes program synchronizes content between the iPhone and the iPad through your computer. iTunes uses its automatic synchronization process via a USB connection. Both the iPad and the iPhone are configured to copy information from the software manager and update music, photos and videos when the devices' sync settings are set to include all checked content in iTunes. To sync additional information, use Apple's MobileMe to synchronize bookmarks, mail, contacts, and your calendar between the devices.

Things You'll Need

  • MobileMe account
  • ITunes 10.0 or later
  • IPhone or iPad docking cable

Step 1

Plug the docking cable into the iPhone and into the port labeled "USB" on your computer.

Step 2

Launch iTunes. Click "iPhone," and click "Sync only checked songs and videos," and click "Sync."

Step 3

Right-click "iPhone," and click "Eject."

Step 4

Remove the docking cable from the iPhone and plug the cable into the iPad. Click "Sync" or wait for iTunes to automatically synchronize the device.

Step 5

Right-click "iPad" and "Eject." Click "Settings" on both the iPad and iPhone, and select "Mail, Contacts, Calendars."

Step 6

Click "Add Account" and "MobileMe" in both the iPad and iPhone. Enter your MobileMe name, email address and password. Click "Next" and "Done."
